Foreign settlers who have lived here for years have left their imprints in the traditions and ways of life in Fort Cochin. The Dutch, Portuguese and the British have controlled the harbour here as it was an important link in trade in ancient times.

The fort here was the first European fort built on the Indian soil in 1530 by Portuguese with the permission of its then ruler. Dutch gained its possession in 1663 until British wrested it from them in 1795. Situated on one of the finest natural harbors of the state, it houses first European township that soon became an important commercial centre and trade centre that flourished under the British.

Fort Cochin beach is a famous hangout for tourists and locals alike. There is a walkway and lots of shops near the beach. The beach is lined with Chinese fishing nets and in the evenings you can see men lifting the catch of the day. There’s a Dutch and Portuguese Palace to visit. There are many old churches, too. There’s Jew Town nearby that sells curios, spices and handicrafts.

From Fort Cochin there are boats to Bolgatty Palace, Vypeen and Cherai. Fort Cochin is away from the city and is a great place to spend a day.
